Welcome! My name is Matthew Whitley and I am the photographer and web designer behind MKW Photography. I designed this site as an outlet for the large collection of photographs that I have created over the course of the past few years. My primary interest in photography is bird photography, but I enjoy shooting many different subjects. Avian photography is amazingly rewarding for a variety of reasons. First, photographing wild birds in their natural environment is enormously challenging. Getting interesting, well composed images of birds requires not only a large lens, but an intimate knowledge of the animals and how to approach them without causing undue stress. The experience of being in the wild photographing wild birds is magical and allows me to experience and record the beauty of nature first hand. Second, birds are fascinating, beautiful creatures that can be found almost anywhere. I live in Florida and the diversity of birds in my area alone is baffling. Being a good bird photographer means being a good birder, and I enjoy learning as much as possible about the subjects I photograph. Last (and certainly not least), birds make for beautiful, artistic images that serve as a reminder of my experiences in the field.

When I do not have a camera in my hand, I am usually in the hospital. I am currently a resident physician in otolaryngology / head and neck surgery (Ear, Nose, and Throat) at the University of Miami / Jackson Memorial Hospital. I also enjoy spending time with my wife and dog, playing guitar, and writing web pages such as this one! My wife and I are actively involved in dachshund rescue and thus always have a house full of crazy dogs! You can find out more about dachshunds and rescue at http://www.c2cdr.org.

It would not be untrue to say that I am addicted to photographic equipment. Over the last several years I have owned nearly every digital camera known to man including a Olympus 340R, Nikon Coolpix 990, Sony P1, Nikon Coolpix 880, Olympus D40Z, Nikon Coolpix 5000, Canon S40, Canon D30, Canon D60, Canon 1D, Canon 10D, and the Canon 20D. I am one of a new breed of photographers that began shooting in the digital age and I am therefore somewhat unfamiliar with film. Although I enjoyed photographing with many of the digital "point and shoots" listed above, I always felt restrained by their lack of flexibility and short lenses. After moving to a digital SLR and purchasing longer lenses I have began to find my photographic voice and love learning all that I can about photography. The following is a list of the equipment that I am currently using.
